Privacy notice

This notice explains what personal data avoidingcheckmate.com and the game collect, why, and what your rights are. It is written to be read. Last updated September 2026.

Who we are

The site and the game are run by [AI Caramba! registered company name], company number [number], registered office [address], England, which is the data controller. You can reach us at matt@aicaramba.co.uk.

The short version

The website itself collects nothing about you: no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no cookies of our own. The game keeps your board in your own browser unless you choose to sign in; if you sign in, we store your email address and your board so that we can show it to you on any device, and nothing else. You can delete both yourself, at any time, from the game's Save and restore page.

The website

When you visit, our hosting provider, Netlify, receives the technical information every web server receives: your IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the time. Netlify keeps this in server logs for a short period for security and to run the service; we do not use it to identify you. The pages load two typefaces from Google Fonts, which means your browser sends a request, including your IP address, to Google when a page opens; Google's privacy policy governs that request. We set no cookies on the website and run no analytics or tracking.

The game, without an account

The game saves the board you build, your organisation's name, the systems you describe, your answers, and the moves you record, in your own browser's storage on your own device. That data does not leave your device. Clearing your browser data removes it. The game also offers a backup file you can download; that file is yours and stays wherever you put it.

The game, with an account

If you sign in, we process the following, and only the following.

The lawful basis is the performance of a contract with you: you ask for a board that follows you, and storing it is the only way to provide that. We do not use your email address for marketing. We do not sell, share or combine this data with anything else.

What not to put in the game

The game asks about systems, not people. Please do not enter personal data about other people, such as colleagues' names in the owner fields, or details of customers or applicants; a job title does the same work. Anything you type is stored as you typed it, and you are responsible for it.

How long we keep it

Your account and board are kept until you delete them. You can delete your saved board from the game's Save and restore page, and you can ask us to delete your account entirely by email. We may delete accounts that have not been used for twenty-four months, after which the board cannot be recovered.

Where it is stored

Netlify, our hosting and identity provider, stores data in data centres that may be outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States. Transfers are covered by Netlify's data processing terms, which include the standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum required for such transfers. Netlify acts as our processor and does not use the data for its own purposes.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, and ask us to send it to you in a usable form; the game's backup file gives you a copy of your board at any time without asking. You can also object to or restrict our processing in some circumstances. Email us and we will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

The site and the game are for people who run businesses and are not intended for anyone under eighteen. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Security

The site is served over https. Sign-in is handled by Netlify Identity; boards are stored in Netlify's storage and are only returned to a request carrying that account's valid sign-in token. No system is perfectly secure, and you should keep your password to yourself.

Changes

If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything that affects what we collect will be announced in the game before it takes effect.

Email

If you email us, we keep the correspondence for as long as needed to deal with it, and no longer than we need to.
