The book Avoiding Checkmate, this website and the game explain the EU AI Act, as amended by the 2026 Digital Omnibus, in plain English for people who run businesses. They are a guide. They are not legal advice, they do not create a lawyer-and-client relationship, and they do not replace advice from a lawyer who knows your facts. The content is accurate to September 2026; the law and its guidance move, and the authoritative texts are published by the European Union at EUR-Lex and by the European Commission's AI Office. Before you make a decision that turns on the law, take advice.
The game asks questions about AI systems you describe and shows you where, on the book's reading of the law, each one stands. Its results depend entirely on the answers you give. It does not check your work, it does not verify your answers, and a piece shown as safe or castled is a record of moves you have said you made, not a finding that your business complies with anything. You use the game's output at your own risk.
Seeing where a system stands is free. The moves, the board pack and Grandmaster mode unlock with a code printed in the book. The code is for the personal use of people who have bought the book; please do not publish it. We may change what is free and what is unlocked, and may withdraw or change the game, at any time.
You may sign in to the game with an email address so that your board follows you between devices. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; you are responsible for what is done with your account. You can delete your saved board from the game at any time and can ask us to delete your account by email. We may suspend or close an account that is used to abuse the service, to attack it, or to enter content that is unlawful or that infringes anyone's rights.
What you enter in the game is yours. You are responsible for it, including for not entering personal data about other people or confidential information you are not entitled to share. We use it only to show you your own board, as the privacy notice explains.
The book, the website, the game, the illustrations, the cast, the quizzes and the text are copyright works owned by Matthew Blakemore, all rights reserved. You may read, play and share links; you may not copy, reproduce, scrape, republish, or use the content to train a model, without written permission. Chess: The AI Act Framework is a trade mark; a UK application is pending. AI Caramba! and the Snakes and Ladders AI Framework are registered trade marks. The names of the seven organisations in the book are fictional and any resemblance to a real organisation is accidental.
The site links to retailers and to other sites we do not control, and their terms and privacy notices govern your use of them.
We aim to keep the site and the game available but do not promise that they will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we may change or withdraw them at any time. Because a board saved without an account lives in your browser, we cannot recover it if you clear your browser data; the backup file in the game exists for that reason.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for anything that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Subject to that, the site and the game are provided free of charge and as they are; to the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of them or from reliance on their content, including any decision taken about compliance with the EU AI Act or any other law.
We may update these terms; the date at the top will change. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, though nothing prevents you from relying on the consumer protections of the place where you live.
